Every second Wednesday since January, Chocolate Films has been running free workshops in Digital Skills for the residents of Nine Elms at the R.O.S.E Community Clubroom. Funded by Bellway, the digital media workshops were open to everyone to attend and inspired creativity and brought fun to the residents doorsteps.
We worked with mostly people under the age of 11 and were accompanied by their parents. The first week we did a master class in animation and film-making. The children learnt how to animate using the professional stop-motion programme Dragon Frame and learnt how to film and record sound using Canon DSLR Cameras and interview techniques.
Having had an introduction to filmmaking and animation, it was clear that animation was the favourite activity. Therefore we decide to focus on animation for the other sessions, giving the kids a chance to learn about stop-motion animation in detail.
Over the next five weeks, we experimented with different animation techniques such as light box, paper cut out, lego, drawing and plasticine. We focused on the theme of ’Home’ and we explored this theme through different topics: my favourite place, my pets, my family and my toys.
It was amazing to see the children’s animation technique improve each session. The key thing with stop motion animation is to only move the ‘object’ you are animating a little bit at a time in-between taking photographs. This requires a lot of patience and can be very tricky. It was brilliant to see children as young as six perfect their technique and have a new way to express themselves and to tell stories.
We had stories about pet fish and pirates, cats getting into a fights, animated portraits of family members, aliens invading, going to the park, playing rugby and many more!
We hope you enjoy the film!
